Curriculum

At MA'AVAR, we offer life skills, real-life math, literacy, social skills, cooking skills, art classes, therapeutic groups, local geography (TTC navigation), computer-based therapy and skills and vocational skills.

Listed below are just a few aspects of our adapted curriculum.

1. Each student will obtain a joint or individual bank account to utilize during their time at our program. Initially, the parents will open the accounts with their student, deposit money and provide a debit card for them to use. (These cards can be kept at the program if there is an issue with misplacing items.) Instead of having to collect money for every trip, luncheon, activity or otherwise, we will have them practice using their debit card and withdrawing/depositing cash at the bank. A strict check register will be kept and you will have access to their online banking to track this.

2. Social skills programs, role-playing, group activities will continue to improve interaction appropriate to family, relationships, workplace and home life. Verbal/non-verbal communication skills.

3. Cleaning/cooking skills. These skills can be utilized during visits to our apartment or on-site at the facility that we choose to rent. Also, the shopping related to food preparation.

4. Use of TTC for trips and activities. How to find directions using Google Maps/real maps.  If your student is ready and/or able to use the TTC independently, the teachers and parents will coordinate and prep them to use the TTC to arrive/leave school.

5. Outings with educational aspects integrated into the curriculum. As well, some fun, social activities will be added to improve morale and teach transportation skills.

6. Group sports activities. Gym memberships are a possibility, if parents are interested, as well. In the Winter, we can sign the class up for community center recreational classes indoors, if there is interest.

7. Using the kitchen at our facility (or an apartment rented in the area) to learn cooking skills.

8. Continuing education classes online based on the student's interests. (i.e. Art, Animal Grooming, Yoga, Biology, Chemistry, health and diet, how to use different computer applications, photography, etc)

9. Vocational testing

10. Artistic classes to relax and assist in fine motor skills development.

11. Real-life money math tailored to individual levels. We generally split Math classes into different skill levels, so that everyone gets the material that is best suited for their needs.

12. English will be integrated into life skills. Reading forms, understanding vocabulary, writing letters, sending mail, writing reports, writing diary entries, etc. All activities will be based upon real-life skills and integrated throughout the curriculum.

13. Paying and utilizing utilities, reading bills, applications, reading and understanding official documents such as leases, job contracts, job descriptions, responsibilities, waivers, etc.
